Equal tees 1.4404/316L
Equal tees 1.4404/316L are stainless steel pipe fittings with three outlets of the same diameter arranged in a T‑shape: two in line and one at 90°. They are used to branch or combine pipe runs where all three connections share the same nominal size. In shorthand you may also see them called equal tees, 316L tees or simply tee fittings.
What is 1.4404 / 316L stainless steel?
1.4404 (European EN designation) is the same material commonly referred to as AISI 316L (American designation) or UNS S31603. It is a low‑carbon, austenitic stainless steel noted for its corrosion resistance and good weldability.
- Typical characteristics: low carbon content for reduced sensitisation during welding, enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared with 304 in chloride‑containing environments, and good mechanical strength at ambient temperatures.
- Typical chemical composition (approx.): C ≤ 0.03%, Cr 16–18%, Ni 10–14%, Mo 2–3% (these figures are typical ranges for 316L/1.4404).
- Other names: EN 1.4404, AISI 316L, UNS S31603 — you will see any of these used in technical data sheets and supplier lists.
Applications and uses of equal tees 1.4404/316L
Equal tees made from 1.4404/316L stainless steel are widely used where corrosion resistance and hygienic properties are important or where strong resistance to chloride environments is required. Typical uses include:
- Process piping in the chemical and petrochemical industries
- Offshore and marine systems (sea water exposure, brine lines)
- Food & beverage and brewing — sanitary and cleanable piping
- Pharmaceutical and biotech process lines
- Water treatment and desalination plants
- HVAC and plumbing systems, sanitary installations
- Automotive components, small workshop and garage fabrications
Who uses equal tees 1.4404/316L?
The main users are mechanical engineers, pipefitters, fabricators, maintenance teams and procurement specialists across construction, offshore, marine, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, water treatment and HVAC sectors. They are equally suitable for professional installers and experienced DIY fabricators who require corrosion‑resistant, weldable fittings.
Connections, sizes and forms
Equal tees are supplied in a variety of connection types and finishes depending on the application:
- Butt‑weld tees — common in process and high‑pressure piping for a smooth internal profile and strong joint.
- Socket‑weld tees and threaded tees — used where welding access, assembly speed or smaller diameters make these options preferable.
- Surface finish — available from mill finish to polished surface grades for sanitary use; selection depends on cleanliness and aesthetic requirements.
Advantages and practical notes
Advantages: 1.4404/316L equal tees combine corrosion resistance (especially in chloride environments), excellent weldability and good formability. The low carbon content reduces the risk of sensitisation during welding, which helps maintain corrosion resistance at welds.
Practical considerations: While 316L offers superior corrosion resistance compared with standard 304 in many aggressive environments, it is not immune to attack by strong oxidising acids or concentrated hydrochloric/sulphuric acids at high temperatures. Always check chemical compatibility for the intended service conditions and consider appropriate grades or linings for extreme environments.
Buying and technical advice
When selecting equal tees 1.4404/316L, confirm the required:
- size and pressure rating,
- connection type (butt‑weld, socket, threaded),
- surface finish and any sanitary requirements,
- relevant standards or certification required for your industry.
