Round bars
Round bars — also called metal rods, solid bars or bar stock — are solid, cylindrical lengths of stainless and high‑performance steels used as a basic raw material for machining, fabrication and structural work. In an online stainless steel shop you will typically find round bars in a variety of diameters and finishes, supplied for cutting, turning, drilling or forging to make shafts, pins, bolts, spacers and many other parts.
What are round bars and how are they used?
Round bars are solid cylindrical sections of stainless or specialty steels supplied in straight lengths or cut to size. They are a preferred shape when strength, torsional resistance and easy machining are needed. Common uses include:
- turned components: shafts, spindles, pins and axles
- fasteners and fittings for food, chemical and marine environments
- architectural fixings and balustrades
- prototyping, workshop and garage projects
- offshore and heavy industry applications where corrosion and heat resistance matter
Materials and grade designations
This category covers only stainless, acid‑resistant and heat‑resistant steels — not aluminium or plain carbon steel. Commonly stocked families and examples are:
- Austenitic stainless — widely used for general corrosion resistance and excellent formability. Typical grades: 304 (often labelled A2 / AISI 304) and 316 (A4 / AISI 316 or 316L). These are usually non‑magnetic in the annealed state and are common for food, medical, chemical and marine environments.
- Ferritic stainless — e.g. grade 430 — magnetic and cost‑effective where moderate corrosion resistance is acceptable (decorative trim, some architectural work).
- Heat‑resistant stainless — e.g. grades marketed as 310 and similar alloys — selected when service at elevated temperatures is required. These retain strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures better than standard austenitic grades (exact temperature limits depend on the specific alloy and service conditions).
Where helpful, suppliers will show both European and US/industry labels (for example 304 / A2 / AISI 304 or 316 / A4 / AISI 316), so you can match material to specifications or drawing notes.
Industries and typical applications
Round bars are used across a wide range of sectors. Examples include:
- Automotive — pins, shafts, fittings and trim components.
- Construction and architecture — handrails, balustrade posts, fixings.
- Food and beverage — hygienic fittings, machine parts and spindles (using 304/316 grades).
- Chemical and process — pump shafts, fasteners and components needing acid resistance (often 316/316L).
- Offshore and marine — mooring fittings, shafts and fasteners where corrosion resistance in seawater is essential (commonly 316 or specialised alloys).
- Workshop and home projects — DIY shafts, axles, supports and ornamental work.
Forms, sizes and finishes
Round bars are available in a range of diameters from thin rod sizes up to substantial bar stock. Typical finishes include turned, bright, ground or polished surfaces. Choice of finish affects machinability, surface appearance and tolerance. Bars can be supplied as full lengths or cut to your required size where the supplier offers that service.
Machining, welding and handling tips
- Machining: Austenitic grades (304, 316) machine well but can work‑harden — use sharp tools and appropriate feeds. Ferritic grades machine differently and may give a different surface finish.
- Welding: 316L is preferred for welded assemblies exposed to corrosive environments because its low carbon content reduces carbide precipitation. Follow standard welding practice for each grade and use matching or suitable filler materials.
- Magnetism and hardness: Austenitic stainless is generally non‑magnetic when annealed but can become slightly magnetic after cold working. Ferritic stainless is magnetic. Most stainless bar grades are not hardened by conventional heat treatment (they gain hardness by cold working).
- High temperature use: Heat‑resistant grades are selected for elevated temperature work; check the manufacturer’s data for allowable temperatures and oxidation resistance for your specific application.
How to choose the right round bar
When selecting round bars, consider:
- required corrosion resistance (fresh water, seawater, acids, food contact)
- mechanical properties (strength, toughness, fatigue)
- service temperature (for heat‑resistant grades)
- magnetic or non‑magnetic requirement
- surface finish and tolerances for machining or assembly
If you need help choosing the correct round bar or bar stock for a technical application, contact the supplier with your application details (environment, loads, temperature) so they can recommend suitable stainless or heat‑resistant grades and finishes.
