Seamless stainless tubes 1.4539
Seamless stainless tubes 1.4539 are high-performance, superaustenitic stainless steel tubes (commonly known as AISI/UNS 904L; EN 1.4539; DIN X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5). These seamless tubes combine excellent resistance to acids and chlorides with good mechanical strength, making them a preferred choice where corrosion resistance in aggressive environments — including seawater — is essential.
What is 1.4539 (904L)?
1.4539 is a superaustenitic, acid-resistant stainless steel grade characterised by elevated nickel, chromium, molybdenum and copper contents. Typical chemical composition ranges (approx.) are: Cr 19–23%, Ni 23–28%, Mo 4–5%, Cu ~1–2% with low carbon. The alloy is austenitic and essentially non‑magnetic in the annealed condition. Because of its chemistry, 1.4539 offers improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing media compared with standard grades such as 316/316L.
Seamless tubes — product form and benefits
Seamless stainless tubes are manufactured without a longitudinal weld. This construction gives the tubes:
- Improved pressure performance and uniform mechanical properties around the circumference;
- Better leak integrity for demanding process and hydraulic systems;
- Smoother internal surfaces for heat exchangers, condensers and fluid handling applications.
When made in 1.4539 (904L), seamless tubes provide a corrosion‑resistant solution suitable for aggressive chemicals and chloride‑bearing environments such as seawater and brines.
Typical applications and industries
Seamless stainless tubes 1.4539 are used across a wide spectrum of sectors where resistance to corrosive media is critical. Common applications include:
- Chemical and petrochemical processing — piping, reactors, heat exchanger tubing and transfer lines handling oxidising and reducing acids;
- Offshore and marine — seawater piping, desalination equipment, ballast and cooling systems;
- Power and utility — heat exchangers, condensers and flue gas desulphurisation components;
- Pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals — process tubing where contamination and corrosion must be minimised;
- Shipbuilding and marine fittings — where chloride resistance is required;
- Fabrication and custom engineering — from small workshop projects and prototype components to large industrial installations where a durable, corrosion-resistant tube is required.
Fabrication, mechanical properties and working advice
1.4539 is workable using conventional forming and welding techniques. Key practical points:
- Weldability: Good weldability but requires appropriate filler metals and welding procedures to preserve corrosion resistance — bench test or supplier guidance is recommended for critical systems.
- Machining and forming: Can be machined and cold‑worked; may be tougher to machine than lower‑alloy austenitic grades because of higher nickel content.
- Temperature service: Suited to ambient and moderately elevated temperatures; for sustained high‑temperature service consult technical datasheets or supplier guidance.
- Corrosion performance: Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments and good overall resistance to a wide range of acids and chemicals.
How to choose seamless stainless tubes 1.4539
Choose 1.4539 seamless tubing when you need a superaustenitic, acid‑resistant stainless steel with superior chloride and seawater performance compared with 300‑series grades. It is particularly appropriate for process lines, heat exchangers and offshore applications where material longevity and reduced maintenance are priorities. For less aggressive environments or where cost is the primary concern, lower‑alloy grades such as 316L may be sufficient — consult a technical representative to match grade, tube dimensions and finish to your application.
