Seamless stainless tubes 1.4541 / 1.4878 / 321 / 321H / 08Cr18Ni10Ti
Product overview
Seamless stainless tubes in grades 1.4541 (AISI 321 / 08Cr18Ni10Ti) and 1.4878 (AISI 321H) are titanium‑stabilised austenitic stainless steel tubes. They combine good general corrosion resistance with improved behaviour at elevated temperatures (especially the 321H grade). Being seamless (no longitudinal weld), these tubes are used where a smooth internal surface, higher pressure capability and reliable long‑term performance are required.
What these grades are — material explanation
1.4541 (also known as AISI 321, DIN X6CrNiTi18‑10, GOST 08Cr18Ni10Ti) is an austenitic, titanium‑stabilised stainless steel. The titanium ties up carbon and reduces the risk of chromium carbide precipitation during welding, which gives improved resistance to intergranular corrosion compared with unstabilised grades. It is commonly called a corrosion‑resistant or acid‑resistant stainless steel in industry.
1.4878 (often referred to as AISI 321H, DIN X8CrNiTi18‑10) is a close relative of 1.4541 but with a higher carbon content to provide greater strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. That is why 321H is frequently specified for heat‑resisting applications (temperatures up to roughly 800–850 °C in many uses).
Both grades are austenitic and are generally non‑magnetic in the annealed condition. They have good weldability using standard techniques; the titanium stabilisation makes 321/1.4541 less susceptible to sensitisation after welding.
Typical applications and industries
Seamless tubes in these grades are used across a wide range of sectors. Typical uses include:
- Heat exchangers, condensers and boiler tubing
- Process piping and manifolds in chemical and petrochemical plants
- Storage tanks, absorption towers and acid handling equipment in the chemical industry
- Food and beverage processing equipment where hygienic, easy‑to‑clean internal surfaces are required
- Pharmaceutical and paint industry equipment, pumps and agitators
- Automotive and aerospace components exposed to elevated temperature or cyclic thermal loading (e.g. exhaust or heat‑shielding systems)
- Furnace and flue gas systems, and other heat‑resistant applications
- General mechanical engineering and structural tubing where corrosion and temperature resistance are needed
Note: while these grades resist many aggressive media, they are not recommended for prolonged exposure to high concentrations of chlorides or uncontrolled seawater environments without a suitability assessment.
Advantages of seamless tubes
- No weld seam — better mechanical strength under pressure and more uniform wall thickness.
- Smoother internal surface — beneficial for hygienic and flow applications (food, pharma, heat exchangers).
- Reliability at temperature — 1.4878/321H gives improved high temperature strength compared with standard 1.4541/321.
- Good fabrication properties — both grades weld and form well with common industrial methods.
Fabrication, welding and handling guidance
Both 1.4541 and 1.4878 weld readily with conventional processes (TIG, MIG/MAG, MMA). Because 1.4541 is titanium‑stabilised it is less susceptible to intergranular corrosion after welding, so post‑weld annealing is typically not required for corrosion resistance. For 1.4878 (321H), the higher carbon content improves creep resistance, but good welding practice and appropriate filler materials should be chosen to match service conditions. For chloride‑rich environments, specify materials and procedures with care and consult technical data sheets.
Ordering information and certification
We supply seamless stainless tubes in a range of diameters and wall thicknesses. Material certificates (for example EN 10204 3.1) and inspection documents can be provided on request. If you need guidance on selecting between 1.4541 (321) and 1.4878 (321H) for a particular service — for example, chemical exposure, operating temperature or pressure — contact our technical sales team with the operating conditions and we will advise the best option.
Who should choose these tubes?
These tubes are appropriate for engineers, maintenance managers, fabricators and purchasers across industries from small workshop projects to large industrial installations: chemical and food processors, HVAC and boiler makers, automotive and aerospace suppliers, shipyards (with attention to chloride exposure), and offshore or onshore energy projects where austenitic, heat‑resistant or acid‑resistant stainless tubing is required.
Need help? If you would like specific dimensions, surface finish options, or certification details for seamless stainless tubes 1.4541 / 1.4878 (321 / 321H / 08Cr18Ni10Ti), please contact us with your required OD, wall thickness, length and service conditions and we will assist.
