Sheets in steel grade 1.4301/1.4307/304/304L

Sheets in steel grade 1.4301 / 1.4307 (AISI 304 / 304L) are flat stainless steel products made from the widely used austenitic alloy commonly called 304 stainless. This category includes rolled and cut-to-size sheets that combine good corrosion resistance, formability and weldability, making them suitable for a very broad range of applications — from DIY garage projects to industrial and architectural uses.

What is 1.4301 / 1.4307 (304 / 304L)?

1.4301 and 1.4307 are the European EN designations for the stainless grades commonly known in the US as AISI 304 and 304L. 304 is an austenitic stainless steel containing roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel (often written as 18/8). The “L” in 304L means low carbon: 304L has a much lower maximum carbon content than standard 304, which reduces the risk of sensitisation (grain-boundary chromium carbide precipitation) during welding. In practice, 304 and 304L are non-magnetic in the annealed condition and can become slightly magnetic if cold worked.

Where and how these sheets are used

Sheets in 304 / 304L stainless steel are chosen where a combination of durability, hygiene and decorative appearance is needed. Typical uses include:

  • Food and beverage equipment — kitchen worktops, sinks, food processing machinery and storage where hygiene and cleanability are essential.
  • Commercial and residential architecture — cladding, handrails, balustrades and decorative panels.
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industry — non-extreme chemical environments, tanks, ducting and equipment where corrosion resistance and cleanability matter.
  • Automotive and transport — trim, interior fittings and some exhaust or heat‑resistant components (depending on conditions).
  • HVAC and building services — ducting, casing and brackets.
  • Small workshop and DIY projects — brackets, trays, guards and custom-fabricated parts.
  • Energy and light industrial — heat exchangers, cladding and storage where 304’s properties are adequate.

Note: for prolonged service in chloride-rich marine or highly corrosive environments, grade 316 (EN 1.4401/1.4404, AISI 316/316L) is commonly preferred because it offers better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

Advantages and limitations

  • Advantages: good general corrosion resistance, excellent formability and weldability, attractive finish options, hygienic surface, long service life in many environments.
  • Limitations: not the best choice for aggressive chloride environments (e.g. offshore marine equipment in direct seawater), can suffer sensitisation when welded unless low-carbon (304L) or appropriate welding procedures are used, and it is more expensive than plain carbon steels.

Standards and alternative designations

Common equivalents and standards you may see:

  • EN: 1.4301 (≈ AISI 304), 1.4307 (≈ AISI 304L)
  • US/ASTM/AISI: 304 / 304L (often specified under ASTM A240 for plate and sheet)
  • UNS: S30400 (304), S30403 (304L)
  • Colloquial names: 304 stainless, stainless steel 304, “A2” in fastener grades (A2 corresponds to 304-type stainless)

Product forms and surface finishes

Sheets are supplied in a range of thicknesses and surface finishes to suit different uses. Typical finishes include bright/annealed (BA), cold-rolled 2B, No. 1 (hot-rolled), No. 4 (brushed) and mirror-polished finishes. We offer sheets cut to size for easier handling and quicker installation. If you need a specific finish for hygiene, aesthetics or welding, choose accordingly — for example, No. 4 brushed is popular for kitchen equipment, while 2B is a common industrial finish.

Choosing between 1.4301 (304) and 1.4307 (304L)

Pick 1.4301 / 304 for general-purpose applications where strength and corrosion resistance are adequate and welding or sensitisation is not critical. Choose 1.4307 / 304L if you expect significant welding or if you need to minimise the risk of sensitisation after heat input. 304L is commonly specified for welded fabrications and where post-weld annealing is impractical.

Fabrication, welding and care (practical tips)

  • Use compatible filler materials and welding procedures; when in doubt consult your fabricator — low-carbon grades reduce carbide precipitation risk.
  • After fabrication, remove weld scale and consider passivation to restore the protective chromium oxide layer for best corrosion resistance.
  • Clean regularly with mild detergent and water; avoid prolonged contact with chlorides (e.g. salt, bleaches) to reduce risk of localised corrosion.
  • Cold working improves strength but may induce slight magnetism and change surface appearance.

Who buys these sheets?

Customers include tradespeople, fabricators, architects, OEMs, maintenance teams, and hobbyists. Whether you need a hygienic surface for a commercial kitchen, a decorative cladding panel, or robust sheetmetal for a prototype, 304 / 304L stainless sheets are a versatile and widely used choice.
