Stainless steel round bars 1.4021 / 420A
What are stainless steel round bars 1.4021 / 420A?
Stainless steel round bars 1.4021 / 420A are solid cylindrical bars made from a martensitic stainless steel grade commonly identified as 1.4021 (European designation), AISI 420A (US) or DIN X20Cr13. This grade contains a moderate level of chromium (around 12–14%) and a controlled carbon content (typically in the ~0.15–0.25% range), which gives it the ability to be heat treated to higher strength and hardness than many austenitic grades. In plain terms: you get a stainless, hardenable, magnetic steel suitable for components that need wear resistance and strength as well as some corrosion resistance.
Key properties of 1.4021 / 420A steel
- Martensitic and hardenable: can be hardened by quenching and tempered to reach higher strength and wear resistance compared with softer stainless grades.
- Moderate corrosion resistance: better than plain carbon steel but lower than austenitic grades (e.g. 304/316). Suitable for atmospheres with limited corrosive attack.
- Heat resistance: performs well in elevated temperatures and is commonly used in applications up to around 800–825°C for certain uses (depending on environment and heat treatment).
- Magnetic: as a martensitic grade it is magnetic in both the annealed and tempered condition.
- Machinability and welding: machinable in the annealed condition; welding is possible but more demanding — pre- and post-heat treatment are often required to avoid cracking.
- Good resistance to sulphur-containing gases: in many industrial environments this grade shows acceptable behaviour where sulphur compounds are present.
Typical uses and industries
Stainless steel round bars 1.4021 / 420A are used where a balance of strength, hardness and moderate corrosion resistance is required. Common applications include:
- Cutlery and kitchen knives, cutting edges and blades
- Surgical and dental instruments (certain non-critical instruments where corrosion exposure is limited)
- Screws, bolts, pins, springs and small fasteners
- Shafts, axles and wear parts subject to sliding or abrasive contact
- Valves, pump components and tooling in engineering, petrochemical and power sectors (when exposure to highly corrosive media is limited or protected)
- Automotive and general engineering parts where hardness and wear resistance are required
- Small-scale workshop and DIY/garage projects requiring a hardenable stainless material
Note: for long-term, unprotected use in aggressive marine or highly corrosive chemical environments, austenitic or higher-alloy stainless grades (such as 316) are usually a better choice.
How you can work with these stainless steel round bars
- Machining: good machinability in the annealed state; after hardening the material becomes tougher to machine and may require grinding or specialised tooling.
- Heat treatment: annealing before machining improves formability; quench and temper cycles are used to achieve the desired hardness and toughness.
- Welding: possible but requires correct procedure (preheat and post-weld heat treatment) to avoid hydrogen cracking and loss of properties.
- Finishing: typical surface finishes include turned, ground or polished bars — choose the finish depending on the final application (e.g. knife blanks vs shafts).
- Sizing and supply: round bars are commonly available in a range of diameters and lengths and can be supplied cut-to-length or with additional machining services on request.
Standards and designations
This grade is commonly referenced as 1.4021 (EN/EU), AISI 420A (US), DIN X20Cr13 and PN 2H13 in Polish standards. It belongs to the family of martensitic stainless steels, a distinct group from austenitic (e.g. 304/316) or ferritic grades.
Choosing the right material and next steps
If you need stainless steel round bars for cutting tools, fasteners, shafts or similar components, stainless steel round bars 1.4021 / 420A are a practical choice when hardness and wear resistance matter and corrosion exposure is moderate. If you are unsure whether 1.4021 is suitable for your specific environment (for example continuous seawater exposure or aggressive chemicals), contact our technical team — we can advise on material selection, supply options, cutting and heat-treatment services, and provide material certificates where required.
