What is stainless steel 1.4305 / 303?
Stainless steel round bars 1.4305 / 303 are solid, cylindrical bar stock made from an austenitic, free‑machining stainless steel commonly identified as AISI 303 (EN/PN 1.4305, DIN X8CrNiS18‑9). This grade contains added sulphur to improve machinability, which makes it easier and faster to turn, drill and mill compared with standard 304 (1.4301) stainless steels.
Key properties
- Machinability: Excellent — the extra sulphur improves chip formation and tool life when producing turned or machined parts.
- Corrosion resistance: Moderate — generally lower than 1.4301 (304). Suitable for many indoor and mildly corrosive environments but not recommended for heavily corrosive or chloride‑rich (marine/offshore) applications.
- Weldability: Reduced — 303 is less suited to welding than 304; welded joints can show degraded corrosion performance. For welded assemblies consider 304/304L or 316 where appropriate.
- Mechanical behaviour: Typical of austenitic steels — good ductility and toughness. Non‑magnetic in the annealed condition, though some magnetism can appear after cold working.
