Stainless steel round bars 1.4404 / 316L
What are Stainless steel round bars 1.4404 / 316L?
Stainless steel round bars 1.4404 / 316L are solid, cylindrical bars made from an austenitic, low‑carbon stainless steel grade commonly specified as 1.4404 (EN), X2CrNiMo17‑12‑2 (DIN) or AISI 316L (US). This grade contains molybdenum to improve resistance to chlorides and pitting, and the reduced carbon content lowers the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding. In plain terms: these round bars are corrosion‑resistant, weldable and suitable for many structural and precision parts.
Key properties
- Corrosion resistant: Good general corrosion resistance and enhanced resistance to pitting in chloride environments thanks to molybdenum — ideal for marine and chemical exposure.
- Austenitic structure: Non‑magnetic (in the annealed condition), ductile and tough, with good formability.
- Weldability: 316L welds well using common methods (TIG/MIG); low carbon reduces sensitisation so post‑weld heat treatment is rarely required.
- Fabrication: Can be cold worked, machined and ground; machining is generally more demanding than 304 stainless but achievable with appropriate tooling and speeds.
Where and how 316L round bars are used
Because of their corrosion resistance and toughness, 1.4404 / 316L round bars are used across a wide range of applications. Examples include:
- Marine components: shafts, fasteners, fittings and structural parts exposed to salt water.
- Chemical and process equipment: valves, pump shafts, heat exchanger parts and pipework in corrosive environments.
- Food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries: machine parts, fittings and instruments where hygiene and corrosion resistance are essential.
- Medical and surgical instruments: components where corrosion resistance and biocompatibility are important.
- Construction and architectural fittings: balustrades, handrails and decorative elements that require a corrosion‑free finish.
- Automotive and aerospace: specialised components, fasteners and assemblies where higher corrosion resistance than 304 is needed.
- DIY and garage projects: shafts, rods, and custom parts for outdoor or corrosive‑exposed uses.
Standards and common designations
The same material is commonly referenced using different industry codes — useful when specifying or ordering:
- EN: 1.4404
- DIN: X2CrNiMo17‑12‑2
- AISI/ASTM (US): 316L
- Local/older notation may appear as 00H17N14M2 in some datasets.
Forms, finishes and ordering notes
Stainless steel round bars 1.4404 / 316L are usually available in a variety of diameters and lengths and can be supplied in different finishes to match your application. Common supply conditions include turned/bright and cold‑drawn bars for tighter tolerances and improved surface finish. We supply only stainless, acid‑resistant and heat‑resistant steels (no aluminium or plain carbon steels in our range).
Fabrication tips
- Welding: Suitable for TIG and MIG; use standard filler metals for 316L where required.
- Machining: Use rigid set‑ups, sharp carbide tooling and appropriate feeds/speeds — 316L work‑hardens, so maintain good coolant and chip control.
- Surface treatment: Can be pickled, passivated or mechanically finished to improve corrosion performance and appearance.
Why choose Stainless steel round bars 1.4404 / 316L?
If your project requires a balance of excellent corrosion resistance (especially in chloride or marine environments), good mechanical properties and reliable weldability, 1.4404 / 316L round bars are a widely accepted choice. They suit everything from small workshop builds to heavy‑duty offshore and chemical plant components.
Need help selecting the right bar?
If you are unsure which diameter, finish or tolerance you need, contact our sales team with your application details — industry, environment (salt water, chemicals, food contact), and any machining or welding plans — and we will recommend the best 1.4404 / 316L round bar solution.
