Stainless steel round bars 1.4541 / 321
What is 1.4541 (321) stainless steel?
1.4541 steel — commonly known as 321 stainless or AISI 321 — is an austenitic, titanium-stabilised stainless steel (EN: 1.4541 / DIN: X6CrNiTi18-10 / AISI: 321). In plain terms, it is a 17–19% chromium, 9–12% nickel grade with titanium added to prevent chromium carbide formation during welding. That stabilisation improves resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to elevated temperatures.
Why choose stainless steel round bars 1.4541 / 321?
Round bars made from 1.4541 / 321 are chosen where a combination of good corrosion resistance, excellent weldability and reliable high-temperature behaviour is required. They are supplied as solid bars for machining, turning, shafts, studs, dowels, pins and other precision or structural parts.
Key properties
- Austenitic and non‑magnetic in the annealed condition.
- Ti‑stabilised to resist intergranular corrosion after welding or prolonged exposure in the 400–900°C range.
- Good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures; commonly used in heat‑exposed components.
- Excellent weldability and formability compared with many other corrosion‑resistant alloys.
- Moderate resistance to chloride pitting — for aggressive chloride environments consider 316 (1.4401) or higher‑alloy grades.
Typical industries and applications
Stainless steel round bars 1.4541 / 321 are used across a wide range of sectors, from small workshop solutions to heavy industry:
- Chemical and petrochemical: heat exchangers, piping supports, pressure vessel internals, tank fittings.
- Oil & gas and offshore: components exposed to high temperatures where stabilisation is needed.
- Food and beverage: processing equipment and parts exposed to preservatives and cleaning agents (where chloride levels are controlled).
- Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics: hygienic components, mixers and agitators.
- Automotive and exhaust systems: manifolds, exhaust components and brackets subject to elevated service temperatures.
- Power and heat engineering: furnace parts, expansion joints and other high‑temperature applications.
- General engineering and hobbyist workshops: shafts, studs, pins, bolts and turned parts for corrosion‑resistant assemblies.
How you can use these round bars
Common uses for round bars include turned and machined components (shafts, pins, bolts), structural dowels, stud bolts, and any application where long, straight stock is needed for precision fabrication. They are well suited to welding and forming operations, making them convenient raw material for both bespoke one‑off parts and production runs.
Fabrication and machining notes
- Welding: 321 welds well with standard methods (TIG, MIG, MMA); titanium stabilisation reduces the risk of sensitisation during post‑weld heat exposure.
- Machining: like other austenitic grades, 321 can work‑harden; use sharp carbide tools, moderate speeds and adequate cooling/lubrication.
- Surface finish: available in turned, peeled or ground finishes depending on tolerance and surface requirements.
When to choose an alternative
If the service environment contains high chloride concentrations (warm seawater, strong saline solutions) or strong reducing acids, consider higher‑alloy grades such as 316 / 1.4401 (better pitting resistance) or specialised corrosion‑resistant alloys. For very high temperature strength beyond the range where 321 is used, consult material data for more heat‑resistant grades.
Standards and traceability
This product is sold as stainless steel only (no aluminium or carbon steel). Standard designations you may see are: EN 1.4541, DIN X6CrNiTi18-10 and AISI 321. Mill test certificates (e.g. EN 10204) and material traceability can be provided on request to meet project or regulatory requirements.
Summary
Stainless steel round bars 1.4541 / 321 offer a reliable, weldable and heat‑resistant option for many engineering, chemical, food and automotive applications. Use them when you need austenitic, titanium‑stabilised corrosion resistance combined with good fabrication properties. For specific projects we can advise on surface finish, tolerances and certification to match your needs.
